SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RAPE

The Issue of Sexual assault and rape as grown rampant and grown bigger with time and it’s so sad to see people fall victim of such acts in the 21st century. We will both be discussing about various sexual assault and rape that occur across the world. In a country in Africa as Ghana where rape occurs more frequently has it stated in the CRIMINAL OFFENCE ACT- 1960 (ACT29) SECTION 97- Whoever commits rape shall be guilty of a first degree felony and shall be liable on conviction to Imprisonment for a term of not less than five years and not more than twenty-five Years, before we drag deeply into this conversation, let’s walk through what sexual assault and what really is RAPE.
According to Rape Crisis Center ( RCC) at central New Mexico, they defined Rape as an unwanted penetration, whether that is oral, anal or vaginal and Sexual assault as any unwanted sexual contact, including fondling and molestation without consent. It has been brought to awareness that young ladies in their teenage years or young female adults mostly serve as Prey to this Predators on different various account. Based on Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service have revealed that Approximately six women are likely to be raped every week based on a six year statistics and on a Contrary only one man is likely to be raped every year within the same period.

PERPETRATORS
Research has shown on various accounts that majority of the cases were perpetrated by the victims own family members with a few being done by close friends, In the above Statistics by the DOVVSU, it clearly shows that out of the over 1,862 reported cases of rape, only six males were raped, showing an insignificant Figure as against that of women.
In my next thread I will discuss what happens to the victims after being raped, and just what will happen if the victim happens to be pregnant by the predators and what has the Government of Ghana done to set Justice to this Shameful act in our Modern Ghana Society.

STAY TUNED.
